What is ICT4S About?
The ICT4S conferences bring together leading researchers in Information and Communications Technology (ICT) for Sustainability with government and industry representatives, including decision-makers with an interest in using ICT for sustainability, researchers focusing on ICT effects on sustainability and developers of sustainable ICT systems or applications. Equally important to the conference is the inclusion of the views, processes and constraints that the various groups within the society face when pursuing sustainability through ICT, such as, community engagement for community energy group formation, and activism.
The conferences feature an innovative format for presenting new research, focusing on participation and conversation rather than passive listening.
For the first time, ICT4S 2020 will feature the Artist in ICT4S track, whereby artists engaged with the sustainability agenda will showcase their work (e.g., using big data to visually capture resources limits at planetary scale, etc.)
The goals of the conference are to foster critical and constructive discussion of new research results, and to bring diverse stakeholders together to identify and respond to grand challenges in the interplay between sustainability and digital technologies.
The conference will feature roundtable discussions of new research, demos of new technologies, poster presentations of late-breaking research results, along with inspiring keynote speakers and moderated challenge sessions for participants to explore and respond to big challenge questions about the role of technology in tackling climate change as well as societal sustainability challenges (such as equity and loneliness). A programme of tutorials and a hands-on hackathon will run throughout the full conference week, which will be open to all conference attendees (including researchers, community and industry representatives, artists and PhD students). Industry, community, and city representatives are invited to bring along the challenges that they consider relevant for discussion at the round tables, as well as for solution prototyping at the hackathon. An exhibition of ICT for sustainability related artwork will be open to both conference attendees and general public. It is expected that additional prototypes/demos and artwork produced throughout the week will continuously be added to the open exhibition.
